The next version of Android is coming soon... known as Froyo, it’s said to be faster, smarter and further-reaching than its predecessor.

Google says that its new Android Froyo will be up to five times faster than the current incarnation of Android and has also added cloud computing into the mix. Desktop apps will be able to transfer messages to your Android phone and vice versa.

Data can be backed up from your apps to the cloud and it’ll be restored when you install them again on a new device. Great news if you lose or have to replace your Android phone.

Android Froyo also addresses the niggle of not being able to install apps onto SD card by allowing developers to choose whether their apps should be installed on the phone memory or SD card – but you’ll also be able to easily switch them back and forth between the two. *I've never actually found this to be a niggle!

Android Froyo also packs in Flash 10.1.

The Android Wi-Fi hotspot function has also arrived with Android Froyo so you’ll be able to hook other devices up to it to share its data connection.

You’ll also see improved graphics rendering and a serious speed hike – in fact, Google claims the Android Froyo browser is now the world’s fastest.

Finally, the Android Market has also had an overhaul to match the slick new Android Froyo. You’ll now be able to set automatic app updates and install pending app updates with one click.

Best news for me is that the HTC is already in-line to get an upgrade to this when available...

The word from HTC (via Pocket-lint) is that Froyo will be hitting the Desire, Legend and Wildfire handsets around October.

Despite Google rolling out the upgrade to the Nexus One, HTC has its own UI "Touch" - which means it will take longer to ensure full compatibility.

Sounds good to me...

From HTC:

The Android 2.2 (Froyo) update for HTC Desire will start rolling out across Europe this weekend. As well as including the complete set of Android 2.2 features, the update will contain a few special additions of our own through the latest iteration of HTC Sense.

The update will provide 720p video capture, HTC’s App Share widget, as well as our enhanced HTC Caller ID, and improved multi-language keyboard. Also, though the update, HTC Sync will allow HTC Desire users to sync their music with iTunes.

HTC Desire users will be notified that the over-the-air update is available to download when their phone automatically checks for software updates. The update won’t delete any of the phone’s content. However, due to the size of the update, we would advise using a Wi-Fi connection to download it wherever possible to avoid additional data charges.

This update will initially roll out to unlocked HTC Desire handsets. Operator specific versions of the update are undergoing testing and we expect to make them available in several weeks’ time.

I'm on contract with T-Mobile; hope they do theirs sooner than later!
